First Trailer for Star Wars: Battlefront

If you are anything like me, I’m sure you have seen the second trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens about a million times by now. If you somehow missed it, don’t worry, we got you covered. The movie looks amazing (obviously. I mean, it’s J.J. Abrams making a Star Wars film. How could it not be?), and if you didn’t get chills when Han Solo says, “Chewie, we’re home” then we just cannot be friends anymore. My anticipation level is through the roof already and I cannot wait to see the saga continue this December.

Knowing that coverage and excitement would be at a fevered pitch, and idiots like me would be spending their free time exposing themselves to as much Star Wars-related material as they can, Electronic Arts decided to capitalize on the hype train and release a trailer for their own Star Wars masterpiece . Behold the beauty that is Star Wars: Battlefront

I know, most movie-licensed video games are disappointing to say the least. And Electronic Arts is notorious for dropping the ball (they were voted Worst Company in America two years in a row for a reason). But what makes this (hopefully) different is that this is dealing with an established franchise. The Battlefront series launched in 2004 and was followed up with a sequel in 2005. For years a third game was rumored, and eventually put into development, until ultimately being cancelled when LucasArts shut down. This game has been a long time coming, and is not simply a cash grab. I mean, it is kind of a cash grab. But this is not a game that is being rushed in production to capitalize on a movies popularity. Actually, it kind of is… Okay, well, at least this game will not be a movie-tie in, in the sense that it doesn’t revolve around the plot of Episode VII. It will be a stand-alone story that will coincide with the movies release, but not necessarily be tied into its characters. Despite two big strikes against it, I still feel there is enough reason to be very excited and hopeful for this game.

I spent an embarrassing amount of time playing the original Star Wars: Battlefront on the original XBox. I fought the same battles over and over, as storm troopers, as rebels, as shock troopers, as TIE fighter pilots, as everyone. No matter which side I was on, or which soldier I chose, it was always fun. This new installment will take the same ideas and expand your playable options, and will boast over 40 distinct playable classes and characters in each battle. It will mix land skirmishes with aerial dogfights, allowing you to strategize and utilize a certain class’ perk or ability. And if you aren’t sold yet, you can play as Darth Vader and Boba Fett. Oh, and you can fly the Millennium Falcon. Yep. Get that pre-order in now people.

Star Wars: Battlefront will be released November 17, 2015 for the PlayStation 4, X-Box One and PC.
