Reboot Unnecessary: “The Butterfly Effect”

Shocker? I don’t think so. Variety is reporting that the next movie to get it’s own little reboot is Ashton Kutcher’s 2004 feature “The Butterfly Effect” though no specific details on who will direct and star in this film have been released. I am not totally shocked about this news since the original was technically a hit. That movie earned back around 7 times it’s budget, which, according to boxofficemojo.com, was produced for 13 million dollars and went on to gross nearly 100 million worldwide. Not to mention the movie went on to spawn two direct to DVD sequels. Not too shabby.

Honestly, I can’t imagine why they wouldn’t be able to remake this movie on another shoe string budget and be able to make it’s money back. Small budgeted features that go on to make huge amounts of money is sort of a trend lately. This summer alone we saw movies like “The Purge” and “The Conjuring” becoming huge hits despite having a budget equal to what larger budgeted movies (The Lone Ranger) pay for their catering. I can see this being a hit again.

I enjoyed the first movie. I thought it was fairly original and I thought Ashton Kutcher shockingly was able to pull of a serious role for once. Now, the real question one begs to ask: “Does this movie need a reboot?” Sure, why not. If they are rebooting classics why not reboot other shocking hits that are barely ten years old. I can’t wait until they reboot movies “Paul Blart: Mall Cop,” or “Saw”. I am certain people are stupid enough to pay money to go see them again.

No release date has been announced.
